Activities
The activities programme is central to the success of any summer school, as the students are on holiday, and want to have fun after their classes. Our programme includes excursions, games, arts & crafts, quizzes and sports of all kinds.

Activity Leaders are responsible for the planning, promoting and leading interesting and fun activities, working alongside Teacher/Activity Leaders, and the Activities Manager, who oversees the programme.

Activity Positions
Non-residential or Residential Activity Leader (AL)
Activity Leaders assist the AM to organise the activity programme, for instance planning activities, promoting them amongst the students, and preparing materials for forthcoming activities. They also take an active
part in leading individual activities and excursions. To see an example of a typical week's duties, click on the image (right), or click here to see an example diary.
Senior Positions

If you already have substantial experience of leading activities. you might like to consider a senior position:

Activities Managers (AM)

Manages the activity programme, and responsible for the staff working on the programme. Click here to see an example diary.

Senior Activity Leader (SAL)
The Senior Activity Leader's role is to assist the AM in managing specific activities and supporting less-experienced members of staff. This position would suit someone with proven abilities as an AL. Click here to see an example day in the life.

The Activity Programme

The role you play in an activity will vary from day to day, but it could be leading an excursion, taking students swimming, designing a quiz, or running an arts & crafts session.

Working on the activity programme requires energy, enthusiasm and commitment, and the more you put into the programme, the more you will get out of it. Remember that the activity programme has a direct effect on the students' enjoyment of their holiday.

Programme Types

The type of study programmes offered at the centre affects the types of work offered. We offer several types of programmes:

Classic Programme
This is the traditional summer school programme, where students have classes in the morning and activities in the afternoon. They also have one or two half-day excursions and one full day excursion per week. This programme represents the majority of courses sold.

Zig Zag Programme
It is sometimes necessary to run classes in the morning and the afternoon. In zig zagging, if a group has classes in the morning one week, the next they will have them in the afternoon. This means that the same activities will run both morning and afternoon.

London Explorer Programme
Classes and one full-day excursion per week, with the classes in either the morning or afternoon. There are 2 evening activities per week and daytime sightseeing tours. These courses are usually only actively sold in Central London.

Intensive Programme (offered at Cambridge)

22.5 hours of lessons per week plus evening activities and a full day excursion each week.

Closed Groups
Sometimes the programme is designed specially for the group. Some government contract groups operate as a closed group e.g. INPDAP courses at selected centres.

Homestay Programmes

Homestay students generally follow the Classic programme, except that they live with selected host families off-site. Homestay students only come in for evening activities twice per week (usually for discos)
